Coal was mined in the Arigna Valley from the 1700s until the mines closed in 1990. The Derreenavoggy Mine reopened as a visiting attraction in 2003, thanks to widespread community and government backing. The Arigna Mining Experience has been visited by almost 400,000 people since its inception, making it one of Roscommon’s most popular local attractions.
As you wind your way through the lovely countryside of Leitrim and Roscommon, you’ll come upon the structure, which is beautifully constructed to look like a slag heap from a coal mining operation.
Arigna Mining Experience brings history to life by explaining the narrative of Ireland’s coal mining industry and allowing you to explore the past, present, and future of energy. They don’t just transport you back in time to Arigna; they also take you underground!
