Find Things To Do In Limerick

Welcome to Limerick

Limerick, Irish Luimneach (“Bare Land”), is a city, port, and county town (seat) in the west-central Irish county of Limerick. It sits on both sides of the River Shannon, as well as King’s Island, near the mouth of its estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Limerick became a county borough with a city council under the Local Government Act of 1888, and it has remained administratively independent of the county. The city is split into three sections: English Town (on King’s Island), Irish Town, and Newtown Pery (established 1769), the first of which has the city’s old core and the last of which contains the city’s main contemporary streets. Thomond and Sarsfield (or Wellesley) bridge span Shannon’s main channel. The sea is open to communication, and interior navigation is aided by a canal. On each side of the river, there are quays with a graving (dry) dock and a wet dock.
