Westmeath, or An Iarmh in Irish, is a county in Leinster, Ireland’s central province. It is bordered on the north by the counties of Cavan, Meath, Offaly, Roscommon, and Longford, and on the east by the counties of Meath, Meath, Offaly, Roscommon, and Roscommon (northwest). Mullingar is the county town in central Westmeath (seat).
Except for Lough Sheelin in the north, Westmeath’s western boundary is the lower portion of Lough (Lake) Ree and the Shannon River, while the county’s limits wind across the middle plain. The topography of the county is mostly undulating, with elevations ranging from 200 to 400 feet (60–120 metres). Eskers are long, thin glacier ridges that run through the southern part of the country.
Athlone, like Mullingar, is a major industrial city. Towns and villages house around two-fifths of the county’s population. Cattle rearing is particularly significant in the county, which is primarily pastoral. Textile production is also an important source of revenue, as are limestone quarries. The major route from Galway to Athlone runs along the Shannon River.
