Dublin is one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals because of its exquisite Georgian architecture. Dublin is a compact and accessible city, small enough and safe enough to navigate on foot, but the Luas tram system and the DART suburban train system provide good transportation connections across the city. Many of Ireland’s treasures are held in the city’s galleries and museums, and it is also where some of the country’s most historic events took place, most notably the Easter Uprising of 1916. Despite the fact that the combat between the IRA and British forces caused considerable damage to the O’Connell Street district of Dublin (the bullet holes on the General Post Office can still be seen), it was one of the defining events of the Irish Republic.
