Laoighis, commonly known as Laois or Leix, is a county in the province of Leinster in east-central Ireland. It was once known as Queen’s county. Port Laoise (Portlaoise) is the county town (seat) in central Laoighis.
Counties Offaly (north and west), Kildare (east), Carlow and Kilkenny (south), and Tipperary (west) surround Laoighis (southwest). The upper Nore and upper Barrow river basins make up the majority of County Laoighis. The majority of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, which reach 1,732 feet (528 metres) at Arderin, and the northern section of the Castlecomer Plateau are located within the county. Between the Slieve Bloom and the Castlecomer Plateau, the majority of the county is lowland. Improved land makes up more than four-fifths of the county.
