The primary plant types found in the Park are western blanket bog and heathland. The boglands in low-lying places are typically highly wet, whereas a drier community of mountain blanket bog grows further up the slopes. Heather grows abundantly on the slopes, with ling, cross-leaved heather, and bell heather being among the most frequent. Purple moor grass is probably the most frequent and plentiful plant in the Park, and it is responsible for the year-round colour of most of the terrain. Insectivorous plants play an important role in the bog ecosystem. Sundews and butterworts use their leaves to collect and digest insects in order to get nutrients, which are scarce in the bogs.
