From Norman settlement to Cromwell’s invasion to the more recent Civil War in 1922, when the iconic Martello tower was shelled and nearly destroyed, the fort has played an important role in Drogheda’s history.
The Millmount Museum, which displays a wide variety of antiquities of local and national significance, is now housed in the complex. The complex is the most prominent feature in Drogheda, viewable from all directions. Locals affectionately refer to the Martello tower as “The Cup and Saucer.” The entire fort has been recognised as Drogheda’s Cultural Quarter and is a national monument.
