Dun a Ri Forest Park is part of the Cabra Estate, which was formerly held by the Pratt family. Legend has it that Cuchullain, a Gaelic warrior, slept in these woods while battling Queen Maeve of Connaught’s troops. The estates were held by the O’Reilly family until the end of the 16th century, when they were purchased by Thomas Fleming, who constructed Flemings Castle. The castle remains may still be seen in the park. The estate was purchased by the Pratt family, who constructed the town of Kingscourt between 1760 and 1770. The Irish Forest Service purchased the property in 1959, and it was converted into a forest park in the early 1970s.
