On April 16, 2007, Galway City Museum reopened with the opening of its permanent display. A unique 17th century altar piece, the new site of Pádraic’Connaire’s monument, and the Galway City hooker boat, dubbed ‘Máirtn Oliver’ by the common population, are among the attractions on display. The Galway Civic Sword and Great Mace are also noteworthy. The Civic Sword was created around the period of King James I’s Charter. The Great Mace, a large piece of decorative silverwork, was created in Dublin in 1710 and presented to Galway in 1712 by Edward Eyre, Mayor. The Museum’s ground floor has a wonderful collection of relics spanning from prehistoric to mediaeval periods, while the first and second floors have exhibitions that represent Galway’s history, stories, and experiences. Throughout the year, the galleries present a number of temporary exhibits. Prehistoric and mediaeval Galway, Padraic’Conaire – the man and the statue, Charles Lamb’s Lamb in Connemara, dancehall days, film in Galway, the Arts in Galway, and a modern languages-craft show are among the new exhibitions.
