Glenveagh Castle is a castellated house from the nineteenth century that was constructed between 1867 and 1873. The Victorian ideal of a beautiful highland hideaway prompted its development in a secluded mountain location.
It was created by John Townsend Trench, a relative of the house’s builder and first owner, John George Adair, with whom he grew up in Co. Laois. The designer seems to have copied the style of older Irish Tower-houses, giving the castle an appearance of antiquity. The construction stone used was granite, which is abundant in Donegal but difficult to deal with and allows for little detail.
The castle itself is still closed however, the gardens and the castle grounds are still open to the public.
