The population of Great Blasket Island was once thriving, but after a youngster died of meningitis in January 1954, the surviving O’Sullivan family left the island. Since then, several well-known stories and works of literature have been written, reigniting interest in the subject.
Since 1954, the Great Blasket Island has remained deserted, with only infrequent visits. A number of the buildings have been renovated in recent years, and visitors to the island may now make use of facilities such as overnight accommodations and a coffee shop.
