Huntington Castle was erected in 1625 to serve as a fortress on the vital Wexford to Dublin route. The troops left after 50 years, and the family began the process of converting it into a family house. Many generations of the family added different additions and embellishments throughout the years, giving it a very distinctive and intriguing structure. The basement was turned into an Egyptian goddess Isis temple in the 1970s, and the family continues to rebuild and preserve the castle.
The Esmondes primarily designed the Gardens in the 1680s. The Italian-style ‘Parterre’ or formal gardens, as well as the French lime Avenue, exhibit remarkable formal plants and patterns (planted in 1680). The world-famous yew walk, which is thought to be over 500 years old, is a highlight.
