Powerscourt Estate, a 19-hectare rural estate in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, Ireland, is known for its house and beautiful gardens. The house, originally a 13th-century fortress, was significantly renovated by German architect Richard Cassels between 1731 and 1741. A fire in 1974 left the house in ruins until it was restored in 1996. The Wingfield family had long desired Phelim O’Toole’s estates, hoping to provoke him into a revolt that would result in forfeiture. The Wingfields killed Phelim on May 14, 1603 in the Killing Hollow near Powerscourt, despite Phelim’s grandson and successor Turlough son of Phelim’s son being in control of Powerscourt. Sir Richard Wingfield was given a 21-year lease of the manor of Powerscourt by King James I of England on October 27, 1603. The O’Toole lands were forfeited due to Brian O’Neill and Phelim O’Toole’s rebellious activities.
