Over the years, several structures must have inhabited the cold and exposed Rock, but it is the religious remains that have survived the Cromwellian army’s depredations in 1647. Until the mid-1700s, the enormous mediaeval cathedral was utilised for worship. A 19th-century high cross and mausoleum for local landowners, the Scully family, may be seen among the graves; the top of the Scully Cross was demolished by lightning in 1976.
