The first documented race meeting was held in 1837 at Roscommon Racecourse, and it was organised by the British Military, who had a base in the town at the time.
Racing began in 1885 and has continued ever since, with the exception of a 12-year hiatus from 1936 to 1948. From one meeting per year to nine meetings per year, from mid-May to late-September/early-October, racing has evolved significantly. The track is right-handed, one mile and two furlongs long, and has a significant rise to the winning post.
Roscommon Racecourse has produced some of Ireland’s most well-known racing personalities throughout the years. Leading trainers and jockeys from both Flat and National Hunt racing in Ireland sponsor the track. Many horses have gone on to far bigger things on the international scene throughout the years, and we are keen to see this trend continue.
