In 1992, a group of enthusiasts founded Dromod’s legacy company. It is in a grove of Ivy that they discovered the ancient Cavan and Leitrim Railway building, the water tower, and the Engine Shed, which are all concealed from the public. The conservationists were granted permission to enter the shed, which still reeked of the residual heat and cinders from a previous use. They may also walk 1/2 mile towards Ballinamore and Cloncoolry to the intersection. Trackbed condition is good.
After the first inquiry, the Dromod train station building, property, and trackbed were acquired. In addition to new sidings, a new workshop, and a carriage shed, the railway was also resurfaced. Other vehicles, including steam and diesel locomotives, were transported to Dromod by the organisation. On May 31, 1995, the Fowler Diesel “Dinmore” debuted to the public. The next day, the Kerr Stuart “Dromad” and 47c rolled off the line.
They have also purchased an assortment of vehicles including aircraft and buses. Over 20 years, the repair of their steam engine, “Nancy,” cost them £160,000.
You can only experience historic steam and diesel locomotives while climbing into an aircraft cockpit when on an Ireland family vacation in Dromod. In addition to doing several television and documentary appearances, they’ve done stuff like BBC “Great Rail Journeys”, which included Michael Portillo, and a TG4 documentary last year called “Beidh Me ar Ais”.
