Welcome to Tullynally Gardens. They, like the castle, are almost 350 years old. The Pakenhams (later Earls of Longford) came here in the 17th century, and three generations of the family currently reside here. The gardens and beautiful grounds were designed mostly in the early 1800s, but the current owners, Thomas and Valerie Pakenham have added many new elements. Take the main route to the walled Flower Garden and see the llamas and stone “Nandi” (holy Indian bulls) next door, or take the way to the Grotto, which has amazing carvings by a local artisan. Alternatively, take the Forest Walk to the Chinese Garden and then to the Lower Lake, which is home to a couple of swans.
There are beautiful trees and vistas everywhere – as well as lovely decorative summer cottages to relax in. There is a unique Tree Trail for tree lovers to follow, and an interesting Treasure Trail for youngsters to explore.
After visiting the grounds, it’s recommended to return to the sunny Tearoom in the Castle Courtyard, which serves teas, coffee, and excellent handmade cuisine all day – and don’t miss the magnificent family carriage on exhibit.
