Donegal, Irish Dn na nGall (“Fort of the Foreigners”), is Ireland’s most northerly county, located in Ulster’s ancient province. The county seat is Lifford, a tiny hamlet in eastern Donegal. The Atlantic Ocean borders Donegal on the west and north, Lough (lake) Foyle and Northern Ireland on the east, and Northern Ireland and the Irish county of Leitrim on the south. The rocky coast is significantly indented in the north, with the Inishowen Peninsula sandwiched between Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle. The Finn and Erne rivers are the most important. The Blue Stack, whose highest peak is Lavagh More (2,218 feet [676 metres]), and the Derryveagh, which reaches 2,467 feet (752 metres) at Errigal, are the two main mountain ranges. There is evidence of widespread glaciation. Warm summers and moderate, wet winters characterise the region. The population of Donegal is mostly concentrated around the beaches and river valleys. Donegal, Buncrana, Ballyshannon, and Letterkenny are the principal towns. Donegal is governed by a county council and county manager, with the exception of the county’s metropolitan districts.
